Motz's Corner for 09/24/2006
Kudos to Lincoln East head football coach John Gingery!! After finishing with back-to-back seasons, the Spartans are off to a 5-0 start and they're not looking back. The only two obstacles that lie ahead are Lincoln Northeast and Lincoln Southwest, two powerhouse teams that are also vying to get a high seed in the playoffs. East meets Northeast Friday night at Seacrest Field and the Rockets have been playing well as of late. Their only setback was to Kearney, where the Bearcats narrowly held off the Rockets 7-6. East, on the other hand, has soundly defeated each opponent with the exception of Southeast (only winning that 21-14). No matter how you look at it on paper, this will be a textbook showdown between both schools. It could be a game for Jim Ebke to prove how valuable a quarterback and leader he is for East. As of last week, Ebke was the leading rusher in Class A. Northeast would pick up big wild card points with a win over East. Justin Svehla, Trent Svehla, Tyler Collier, Drake Thege and Tyler McManaman need to execute the Rocket offense and get ahead early if they want to beat the Spartans. Otherwise, if the upper hand is favor of East, it could be a long night for Northeast. When you talk to fans or outside observers, they all say both teams are playing great football at the perfect time of the season. Unfortunately for us (Lincoln Prep Sports.com), we won't be there for the game, since we're covering another big showdown with Waverly and Norris. However, this former Rocket will be there in spirit and wish the best of luck for both teams. No matter who wins, this should set the tone for who should be another contender from Lincoln for the state championship.
